Expectations of Students in Online Course

Welcome to Mrs. Fogelson’s 8th Grade Social Studies Course.  As this is an online course, here are a few things you will want to know.  These are some of the expectations I will have for your behavior in class.  Also, I will briefly introduce some of the “rewards” you can earn while in this class.  Then, you will want to know what the consequences are if you don’t follow these simple rules.  This is a basic list and a great reference guide for you while in my class; however, please note that this is not a definitive list.

Behavior
1. Integrity – Do your own work.  Personal integrity goes a long way, and helps to keep you enrolled in school.  Be sure to not steal other people’s work.  Do not plagiarize.  Make sure you are doing the best that you can.
2. Plan – Set up a schedule for yourself and your online course work.  By setting up a schedule, such as certain days to review the material, one day to review assignments that have already been turned in, and a few days to complete the work will help you stay on track.
3. Participate – Part of being in an online class is participating in class discussions.  Make sure you follow these simple netiquette rules:
o   Be Kind
o   Contemplate before Submitting
o   Don’t YELL or use slang
o   Share the Love – make sure to comment on several different people’s posts, not just a certain few.
4. Be Timely – Make sure that you are on time with your assignments.  Know the due dates, and get the work done and submitted in time.
5. Communicate – Be sure to communicate with your instructors when you have a problem or a question.  Being in an online class can be difficult at times, but by staying in touch with your instructor, your instructor can help out.
6. Be Understanding – Know what the expected turn-around time is from your instructor in regards to grading assignments and responding to emails.  Online teachers are not constantly connected to their computers and usually have a response time in when they will return phone calls, emails and assignments.  It is also important to understand that teachers can have weekends off, too.

Motivation and Rewards
Student “Passport” – When students complete certain tasks, they will get a stamp in their passport.[i]  There is a portion of the class in which students do not have to complete tasks in a linear manner.  There are ten tasks that the student completes and can be done in any order.  Students are required to get ten “stamps” in their passport, signifying completion of these tasks.
Badges – Create badges that students can earn when they have completed a certain task.  Different Badges can be earned for different types of projects, or for certain behaviors that should be demonstrated during the class.  Can you earn all of the badges?  Can you work your way up the ranks?
Leader Board – Top Ten Students in Class.  Updated weekly.

Consequences
I really hope that I will not see any disruptive behavior during this course.  However, if I do, here are possible consequences.
Rude or disruptive behavior in online discussions:  Online discussions are an integral part of online learning.  You know what is expected of you (see above under Netiquette).  If you are not acting in a positive manner towards other students, you will be blocked from joining/posting in the online discussions.  You will not want this consequence, as it is part of your grade.  If this does happen, you will be given an alternative assignment that includes extensive writing.
Plagiarism:  When you steal someone else’s work, you are cheating.  This can result in removal from the class.  Depending on the extent of the offense, and how many times it has happened, the initial consequence will be receiving a ZERO on the assignment or project.  Plagiarism can also result in expulsion from the school.
Late Work:  Late work will not be accepted.  Please bear this in mind when you are planning out your week.  If you have extenuating circumstances, though, please contact the instructor before the assignment is due – not after!

I look forward to working with you in this Social Studies class.  We will have many fun projects to complete, many interesting topics to debate and several fascinating events to explore.
