Your Task as a Student

Responsibilities of the online learner - Section V

1. Time Management - In order to be successful in an online class, the student must have time management skills.  Here are a few tips to help you out.
  • Plan your week - When you know what lessons and assignments are due, you can block time out on a schedule to help you plan the week.
  • Prioritize your tasks - When you look at the week's assignments for your online classes, use the Big Rock theory - plan the large projects and assignments first, and then fill in around those blocks of time.
  • Eliminate distractions - When you get rid of distractions, such as Facebook or your cell phone, you are able to focus more on the task at hand.
  • Take breaks often - Be sure to schedule breaks.  It is good to get away from your computer about every 20 minutes.  Try a Focus Booster to insure you step away to be able to refresh and work smarter.                                                              (adapted from Effective Time Management)
 2.  Self-Motivation - The effective online student understands the importance of Self-Motivation, or the force that drives you to do things.

3. Organization - In order to be successful, you have to be organized.  Set up folders on your computer for each class.  Be sure to save all of your assignments while writing/creating them, and before you send then to your teacher.  Organization is key!

4. Be Present - Make sure that your presence is known online.  One aspect of online learning is to participate in discussions.  Remember to Contemplate before submitting!

These are the four main aspects of online learning success.  When you have these down, the class should go smoothly.
